Andrea Southey Painter
I have a passion for paint, I love how it moves, mixes and marks the surface. I love to experiment and keep my work constantly evolving through continued practice.
My work explores the marking of time through colour, texture and rhythm. It is spontaneous, instinctive and full of energy. Each piece is made by building layers of paint which are reworked and over-painted with elements of repetition and pattern. I work using a variety of tools from spatulas, rollers, card, pads, fingers and occasionally a brush!
I'm interested in the process of making, just as much as the aesthetic quality of the finished piece and use art-making as a way of exploring the world and attempting to capture the essence of a specific moment in time. My landscapes are inspired by real places but are then developed from memory focussing on the feel and ambience of a place enabling both an internal and external experience. This process becomes a dance between expressing the abstract such as thoughts, feelings & mood with the representational imagery of the external world.
I'm interested in the repetitive and rhythmic process of painting and how these processes mirror the patterns of not only our thoughts but also our actions, behaviours, habits, rituals and ultimately the cycle of life itself.
